DNS routes make up a key component of Internet's Domain Name System. These routes allow computers to communicate and locate each other. The DNS converts human queries into IP address that devices can use for communication.

DNS is a system that uses recursive servers in order to process requests. Recursive servers either give the user a response to their query, or they go to a higher-level nameserver if there is no answer. The next-level named server can return the desired result or cache this record for future use.

When an user sends a question, the recursive-server looks up and returns the IP address of that server. The recursive service then sends a user's query to the next-level server, which can then send the request back. The recursive server then passes the request on to another recursive server, and so on until the client gets an answer from a nameserver that knows exactly where the requested resource is.

In general, the recursive servers tries to forward the request as fast as possible to the next level nameserver. If it is not able do this, then the next-level server will have to go through multiple rounds of queries before a solution can be reached.

This can be a lengthy process, depending on the speed at which the recursive services are running and how fast your internet is. This can cause frustration for business-critical apps that must respond quickly.

While there are solutions to reduce the time it takes for a query to reach its intended destination, these solutions can still have performance issues. As an example, a recursive web server cannot tell if a client is coming from a Continent Code. It will then direct the visitor to the wrong server.

GeoDNS can solve this issue. This technology identifies a user's IP location and delivers a different response based on the user's region. For example, users in Brazil and Asia will receive a link to New York while Europeans will get a link to London.

GeoDNS, in combination with Anycast, is used to reduce latency and balance load for applications that reside in different places. It's not the perfect solution, as not all visitors have their IPs stored on the recursive servers. Some users will not be able to access the server they want because of a DNS or TTL error.
